Who runs Screencap?

Screencap is operated by Dharma Loop LLC, a Wyoming LLC in the United States. The company is the controller of personal information under the Privacy policy and the party you agree to in the Terms, which are governed by Wyoming law.

Screencap launched in October 2026, so it is a young service without a long public track record. The facts below are written so you can check each one yourself.

Is Screencap the same company as Cap?

No. Screencap is a fork of Cap, the open-source screen recorder from Cap Software, Inc. The Cap team wrote the recorder, the editor and the sharing pages that Screencap is built on, and we are grateful to them. Screencap is run separately and is not affiliated with Cap Software, Inc.

The original lives at cap.so and github.com/CapSoftware/Cap. For a side-by-side, see Screencap vs Cap.

What does Screencap change?

Screencap runs the code as a hosted service that is free today, adds optional end-to-end encryption in the Mac app, and lets you bring your own OpenRouter key for transcripts and AI summaries. You pay only OpenRouter for those, and the details are on the pricing page. Encryption is covered on the security page.

The code is public under the AGPL-3.0 licence at github.com/ques123/screencap-web. Screencap supports only its own hosted service, not self-hosting.

Where is my data stored?

Recordings are stored on Cloudflare R2 in North America. The app servers and database run on Hetzner in Germany. Sign-in uses an email one-time code, so there are no passwords to leak.

Our website analytics are self-hosted and cookieless. Retention, deletion and the full list of services are in the Privacy policy. As of October 2026, Screencap holds no HIPAA, SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification and has had no independent security audit.
