Does Screencap train AI on your recordings?

No. Screencap does not use your recordings to train AI models. Screencap's servers hold no AI provider keys and run no AI on your recordings. Transcripts, titles, summaries and chapters appear only if you add your own OpenRouter key, and never for end-to-end encrypted recordings.

When does any AI touch my recordings?

Only when you connect your own OpenRouter account. Screencap has no AI keys of its own, so without yours nothing is sent anywhere. The Privacy policy says the same in section 2a, and the pricing page shows how to set it up.

With a key saved, the audio of new recordings goes to OpenRouter and the speech-to-text provider you picked, in 5-minute MP3 chunks. The transcript then goes to the summary model you picked. OpenRouter bills your account directly, and your key is stored encrypted until you remove it.

What do OpenRouter and the model provider see?

They see the audio and transcript of each recording you send through your key. OpenRouter's documentation says it does not store your prompts or responses unless you opt in to logging, and it keeps request metadata such as token counts and latency (OpenRouter data collection docs, checked 25 October 2026).

The model provider is a separate party with its own policy. OpenRouter says some endpoints train on data or retain it, and that "Zero Data Retention (ZDR) means that a provider will not store your data for any period of time" (OpenRouter ZDR docs, checked 25 October 2026). Providers that store nothing also cannot train on it.

Screencap's Zero data retention switch sends zdr: true with each request, so only endpoints with that policy are used. It is off by default and needs a saved key. You can also set rules in your own OpenRouter privacy settings.

Which recordings never reach AI?

Encrypted recordings, recordings made without a key, and any recording where you switch the features off. Screencap cannot read an end-to-end encrypted recording, so it makes no transcript or summary for one (see Screencap security).

SituationSent to AI?
No OpenRouter key savedNo, nothing is sent

You can also switch off summary, chapters, transcript, captions, comments and reactions for each recording in its settings.

How does this compare with Loom and Atlassian?

Atlassian, which owns Loom, publishes its AI data rules on its AI trust page (checked 25 October 2026). It says its LLM providers "do not use your inputs and outputs to improve their services", and that Atlassian may use de-identified, aggregated metadata to fine-tune open-source models that run in its own infrastructure.

That page does not mention Loom's AI features, so check Loom's own settings before relying on it for Loom. The difference with Screencap is where the choice sits: Screencap's AI features stay off until you add your own key, and you choose the providers yourself. Our Loom alternative page covers the other differences.

How do I turn AI off or remove my key?

Open Settings, then AI & transcription, and remove your OpenRouter key. Screencap stops sending anything for new recordings, and the key is deleted.

  1. Open Settings in the dashboard and choose AI & transcription.
  2. Remove the key, or switch on Zero data retention if you want to keep using AI.
  3. Turn on encryption in the Mac app (Settings, General) for recordings that must never reach AI.

Transcripts already made stay with the recording until you delete it. Questions about your data go to [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

Does Screencap use my recordings to train AI models?

No. Screencap does not use your recordings to train AI models. Screencap's servers hold no AI provider keys and run no AI on recordings by themselves. AI features run only after you add your own OpenRouter key.

Does Screencap send my screen recordings to ChatGPT or OpenAI?

Not unless you choose it. Screencap sends nothing to any AI service until you add your own OpenRouter key and pick a model. If you pick an OpenAI model in OpenRouter, that provider receives the transcript, under your OpenRouter account.

Can I stop OpenRouter and model providers keeping my data?

You can turn on Zero data retention in Settings under AI & transcription. Screencap then asks OpenRouter to route each request only to providers with a zero data retention policy. Fewer models are available with it on.

Are encrypted recordings ever sent to AI?

No. Screencap cannot read an end-to-end encrypted recording, so it makes no transcript, title, summary or chapters for it.

Is the Mac app's caption feature sending audio anywhere?

No. Captions in the Mac editor run on your Mac with a speech model you download once, and only when you press Generate Captions.
