How do I record my screen online with nothing to install?

You sign up, then record from the Screencap dashboard in your browser. These steps work on Windows, Linux and any computer where you cannot install apps.

  1. Sign up at screencap.co/signup. Screencap emails you a one-time code, so there is no password to make.
  2. Open the dashboard and choose New recording.
  3. Choose what to record: Full Screen (recommended), Window, Current tab or Camera only.
  4. Pick your microphone from the list, or leave it off.
  5. Start recording. Your browser asks which screen, window or tab to share. Choose one and confirm.
  6. Stop recording when you are done, then copy the share link and send it.

The link plays in any browser, so the person you send it to needs no account and no app.

Which browsers can record the screen?

Use Chrome or Edge. Those are the browsers we recommend for screen recording on Windows and Linux.

Your browser decides what you can share, through its own picker. That is why browser recording offers Full Screen, Window and Current tab, and has no custom area. The Mac app can record an area.

What quality and audio does browser recording give?

The recorder asks your browser for up to about 1080p at 30 frames per second. The browser may deliver less, depending on your screen and computer. It does not record 4K.

Choose your microphone in the recorder to add your voice. Treat the microphone as the audio you can count on. To record the sound your computer plays, use the Mac app and its System Audio switch.

Camera only mode works in the browser. A camera bubble over your screen works in browsers that support picture-in-picture capture. In other browsers the camera stays on the Screencap recorder page.

What needs the Mac app instead?

Recording in up to 4K, the Studio editor and end-to-end encryption all need the Mac app. The app runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 13.1 or later.

If you record something sensitive, use the Mac app with encryption on. Our page on encrypted screen recording explains how it works, and sharing privately covers links and passwords for browser recordings.

Is the online screen recorder free?

Yes. Screencap has no paid plan and does not ask for a card. At the time of writing there is no limit on recording length, and no limit on how much video you store. Screencap adds no watermark to your video files. It is free today, and our Terms say we will try to tell you in advance if that changes. More on the free screen recorder page.

Who sees my recording?

New recordings open to anyone who has the link, so make a recording private or add a password before you send anything sensitive. Viewers who are not signed in as the owner get no download button. You see how many times a recording was viewed.
