Screen recorder with audio: microphone, system sound or both

By Chris, Screencap Team · Last updated: 24 October 2026

Screencap is a free screen recorder that records your microphone, the sound your Mac is playing, or both at once. On a Mac, switch on the microphone and System Audio before you record. In Chrome or Edge on Windows or Linux, the browser recorder captures your microphone.

  1. Switch on the microphone. Your voice is recorded.
  2. Switch on System Audio. The sound your Mac plays is recorded too (macOS 13.1 or later).
  3. Use one or both. Talk over a video or app sound; each switch also works on its own.
  4. Stop recording. The audio is saved with the video as one finished clip you can play.

What audio can a screen recorder capture?

There are two sources, and Screencap treats them as separate switches.

Two separate sources, your voice and your Mac's sound, can be recorded together or alone.

Turn on one, both or neither. A recording with both lets you talk over a clip while viewers hear the clip too.

How do I record my screen with sound on a Mac?

Open the Screencap Mac app, choose a microphone and switch on System Audio, then record.

  1. Open Screencap and choose what to capture: a display, a window or an area.
  2. Pick your microphone in the microphone selector. Choose none to record without your voice.
  3. Switch on System Audio to include the sound your Mac plays.
  4. Press record. In Instant mode your share link is ready when you stop.

The first time, macOS asks for permission to use the microphone and to record the screen. Allow both in System Settings.

Can I record internal audio on a Mac without extra software?

Yes, if you are on macOS 13.1 or later. Screencap captures system audio through Apple's own screen capture, so there is no virtual audio driver to install.

On macOS 13.1 or later, system audio is captured without a virtual audio driver.

On macOS 12 the System Audio switch is disabled, and the app asks for macOS 13.1 or later overall. Apple added an Include System Audio option to the Screenshot toolbar in macOS 27 Golden Gate (Apple Support, checked 24 October 2026). On earlier versions the built-in tools record the microphone only, which is why people reach for a separate tool.

Does the browser recorder record sound?

It records your microphone. On Windows and Linux, open Screencap in Chrome or Edge, allow microphone access and record from the page.

Plan on microphone sound when you record in the browser. To capture the sound your computer is playing, use the Mac app.

What can I do with the audio afterwards?

Studio mode records locally and opens in an editor. Cut and split clips, add auto-zoom on clicks, change the background, and export as MP4 at up to 4K, or GIF at up to 1080p.

Studio mode lets you cut the recording and write captions from its audio.

The Captions tab writes captions from your audio using on-device speech recognition, with SRT and VTT export. Written transcripts and AI summaries on the share page need your own OpenRouter key, which you pay for there. See pricing.

Questions

Do I need BlackHole or Soundflower to record Mac audio?

No, not with Screencap on macOS 13.1 or later. Turn on System Audio in the Screencap Mac app and it captures the sound your Mac is playing using Apple's own screen capture, so you don't need a virtual audio driver. On macOS 12 the toggle is disabled.

Does Screencap record microphone and system audio at the same time?

Yes. The microphone and System Audio are separate switches, so you can turn on either one, both, or neither. Both together suits a walkthrough where you talk over a video or app sound.

Can I record my screen with audio on Windows or Linux?

Yes, in Chrome or Edge from screencap.co. The browser recorder captures your microphone. For the sound your computer is playing, use the Mac app.

Is there a time limit on a screen recording with sound?

Not today. There is no limit on recording length. The audio is recorded with the video, so a long recording keeps its sound.

Can I add captions to a recording with audio?

Yes, in the Mac app. In the Studio editor, open the Captions tab and generate captions with on-device speech recognition. You can export them as SRT or VTT. The first use downloads a speech model.

Why is my screen recording silent?

Usually the microphone is set to None or System Audio is off. Check both switches before you start, and allow microphone access for Screencap in macOS System Settings. On macOS 12, system audio is not available.
