Screencap is a free OBS alternative for Mac if you want a quick recording and a share link without building scenes. Press record, stop, and the link is ready. OBS Studio is still the better tool for live streaming, multi-source productions and desktop recording on Windows or Linux.
- Two ways to work. A streaming studio setup on the left, a one-click recorder on the right.
- The scene editor adds source after source while Screencap is already recording.
- Stop, and the share link is ready and copied. No scene to set up first.
- Stay on OBS for streaming. Use Screencap for quick share links.
Why do people look for an OBS alternative?
Often because OBS does more than they need. As of October 2026, OBS's homepage describes it as free and open source software for video recording and live streaming, with an unlimited number of scenes that combine sources such as window captures, images, text, webcams and capture cards.

That power comes with setup. If you only want to record a window and send it to a colleague, building a scene and choosing a source first is more work than the job needs. People searching for an OBS alternative for Mac often want that shorter path.

Who should use Screencap instead of OBS?
Choose Screencap if you record on a Mac and your goal is to show someone something.

- Quick recordings. Pick a screen, window or area and record. Instant mode has the link ready the moment you stop.
- Share links. Links play in any browser, can be private or password-protected, and show you how many times they were viewed.
- Sensitive screens. The Mac app can encrypt a recording end to end, so the key stays in the link after the # and never reaches our servers. Encrypted recordings give up transcripts and AI summaries.
- Polished demos. Studio mode records locally and opens an editor with auto-zoom on clicks, cursor effects and backgrounds.
Screencap is free today and has no limit on recording length at the time of writing. See pricing for the details.
Who should stay on OBS?
OBS is excellent at what it was built for, and for these jobs Screencap is not a substitute.

- Streamers. Screencap does not stream live.
- Multi-source productions. Switching between scenes with cameras, capture cards, images and text is what OBS is for.
- Windows and Linux desktop recording. OBS has native apps. Screencap has no desktop app there, only browser recording in Chrome or Edge.
- Local-only workflows. If recordings should never leave your computer, a local recorder is the simpler fit. Screencap's Studio mode records locally, but sharing uploads to our servers.
Many people use both: OBS for streams and productions, Screencap for the quick walkthrough you send as a link.
How do I record system audio on a Mac with OBS?
On macOS 13 or later with OBS Studio 30 or newer, add the macOS Audio Capture source. OBS's macOS desktop audio guide (checked 24 October 2026) says it can capture all desktop audio or just a certain application.
On OBS 28 and 29, the guide uses the macOS Screen Capture source instead. Older macOS versions need extra software such as VB-CABLE, Loopback or Sound Siphon. Screencap has a System Audio toggle in the Mac app that needs no driver. Read more on recording with audio.
Can I switch from OBS to Screencap?
There is nothing to migrate. Install the Mac app, choose Instant or Studio, and record. To put existing video files from OBS on a share link, upload them from your dashboard under Import Media. Keep OBS installed for anything that needs scenes or streaming.
Questions
Is there a simpler alternative to OBS Studio?
Yes. Screencap is a free Mac recorder with no scenes to set up: pick a screen, window or area, press record, and get a share link when you stop. It does not stream live or mix several sources, so keep OBS for that.
What is the best OBS alternative for Mac?
It depends on the job. For quick recordings you want to send as a link, Screencap is a free option with Instant and Studio modes. For live streaming, multi-camera scenes or a local-only workflow, OBS Studio is still the stronger choice.
Is OBS Studio free?
Yes. OBS's homepage describes it as free and open source software for video recording and live streaming, and lists no paid tier (checked October 2026). Its source code is under the GNU General Public License v2 or later.
Can OBS record system audio on a Mac?
Yes, on macOS 13 or later. OBS's knowledge base says OBS Studio 30 and newer has a macOS Audio Capture source that captures all desktop audio or a single application. Older macOS versions need extra software such as VB-CABLE. Screencap also records system audio from macOS 13, with a toggle in the app.
Is Screencap open source like OBS?
Yes. Screencap is open source under AGPL-3.0, built on Cap, and you can build the Mac app from the public repository. OBS uses a different licence, GPL v2 or later.
Can I use Screencap on Windows or Linux?
Only in the browser. Screencap has no Windows or Linux desktop app, but you can record from the web dashboard in Chrome or Edge. OBS has native builds for Windows, macOS and Linux, so it is the better pick for desktop recording there.
